Erma Louise (Jones) Asher 1922-2009

Erma Louise Asher, of Rolla, died Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at Phelps County Regional Medical Center. She was 87 years old.

Erma was born May 18, 1922, in Jerome, Mo., and was preceded in death by her parents, Gladys Duncan Jones and Floyd Jones. Other family members include her sister, Lenore Morris, who died in 2006; sister Berniece Gaddy, who died in 1989; and nephew Jack Morris, who died in 2003.

On Oct. 31, 1939, Erma married Kenneth Asher. At the time of his death in 2004, they had been married for 64 years.

Together they had three daughters: Janet Lockhart and husband Tom of Sedona, Ariz., Sue Killian and husband Chris of Rolla, and Mary Bahr and husband Tom of Rolla.

Erma is also survived by nine grandchildren: Allen Affolter, Keith Calvert, Norie Calvert, Christopher Killian, Kenneth Killian, Lora Hounsom, Joe Bahr, Sarah Becker, and her best buddy, Drew Bahr. She is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren, her special niece, Susan Miller of Chesterfield, Mo., and nephew Dr. Smith Gaddy II of Rolla.

Erma was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. When her grandkids visited, they knew they could always count on a sampling of her famous oatmeal cookies.

In their retirement years, Erma and Kenneth loved their winters in Arizona, though she always said her favorite part of the trip was returning home, driving into town and seeing “the lights of Rolla.”

Many people will remember Erma from the years she managed Hope Dress Shop in downtown Rolla, and from the many UMR functions she and Kenneth attended and supported.

A Celebration of Life service for Mrs. Asher will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church.

Prior to the service, beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday, there will be a visitation for family and friends at the church.

A private family burial will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to The Building Fund of the First United Methodist Church
