Norbert Otto Schmidt, Sr., Ph.D 1925-2009

Norbert Otto Schmidt, Sr., Ph.D., 83, of Satellite Beach, Fla., died Tuesday Aug. 4, 2009, at Holmes Hospital in Melbourne Fla.

Born Nov. 15, 1925, in Highland Park, Mich., Norbert graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1949 and served with the 65th Engineers on the Pusan Perimeter in the Korean War.

He was posted around the United States and in Germany before leaving active duty in 1962, having also earned his Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Harvard.

He was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star, among numerous other awards before retiring as a colonel from the army.

After earning a doctorate and teaching at the University of Illinois, he joined the faculty of the University of Missouri, Rolla,(UMR) retiring as Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering in 1990.

A member of ASCE, ASTM, NSPE, and the U.S. Committee of the International Commission on Large Dams and elected to Sigma XI, Phi Eta Sigma, and Chi Epsilon, he was known at UMR for founding continuing education courses in geotechnical engineering. Prominent engineers lectured with him across the United States and in Iceland.

Norbert moved to Satellite Beach in 1991, where he continued to teach his seminars through the University of Florida until 2002. There, he and his wife, Donna, enjoyed the company of fellow West Point graduates.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Donna M. Schmidt, his son, Norbert Otto Schmidt, Jr. of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla., his daughters Susan Marie Smith (Lawrence) of Coral Springs, Fla., Caroliese Schmidt, of Satellite Beach, Fla., Krista Schmidt Eames(Christopher) of Roswell, Ga., and Emily Schmidt Snodgrass(David) of Roanoke, Va., and his grandchildren Hannah Schmidt; Julia, Peter and Jennifer Smith; Patrick Sullivan; Austin, Allison and Simone Eames; and Alexander, Nicholas, Christopher, and Rachel Snodgrass.

A memorial service and burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
