Gladys H. (Huskey) Light 1926-2009

Gladys H. Light (Nanny) slipped peacefully from this life to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Aug. 28, 2009. She was surrounded by her family, who lovingly held her until she passed.

Gladys was born on Sept. 25, 1926, in Rolla, Mo., to Margaret and Richard Harrison Huskey. She was married Jan. 25, 1946, to Albert (Ab) William Light.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Albert, a brother Harold, a brother William H., mother Margaret and father Richard.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda (Light) Bush and her husband George Bush, of Springfield, Mo. She is also survived by three grandchildren and their spouses; Janice (Bush) Smith and husband Timm; Greg Bush and wife Amy (Neil) Bush and Stephanie (Bush) Kellogg and husband Greg, all of Springfield, Mo. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren; Logan, Landon, Layton and Lydia Smith; Grant and Abigail Bush; Pierson, Andrew and Mitchell Kellogg. Gladys is survived by one sister that she adored; Dorothy Hance, Rolla, Mo. Gladys also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends that there was a mutual adoration for.

Gladys loved the city of Rolla and always considered it to be her home. Even after moving to Springfield in 2006 to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren, she longed for her home of 80 years.

Gladys found her greatest joy in her family. She leaves them with a lifetime of treasured memories of someone who poured out unconditional love and affection. She was truly a mother and a Nanny who lived to see joy and pleasure on the face of her loved ones.

Gladys was a member of the Rolla community until 2005. Nanny was so proud of her service to Phelps County Regional Medical Center. She retired after almost 46 years of employment during which time she made many lifelong friends. Nanny also served on the Rolla City Council for many years. After retirement from PCRMC, Nanny ran for and won a seat on the PCRMC hospital board.

Nanny’s last act of community service was as a volunteer at PCRMC, a job that she dearly loved and looked forward to each week. Nanny was active her entire life in her church, most recently Rolla First Assembly of God where she loved singing and baking cookies on mission trips to Mexico. Mother had a lifelong dream to go to Hawaii and made that trip in 2004. She loved traveling with Linda.

Nanny rarely met a stranger. She had a keen ability to tell a story or to write a poem. Her grandchildren knew that Nanny would let them do anything they wanted to do while at her home. The worst punishment they ever received was being called by their first name rather than “Sweetheart.” We will miss you so much Nanny.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, 2009, at Null & Son Funeral Home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept.1, 2009, at Rolla First Assembly of God.
The family has requested that any donations be made in Nanny’s memory to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
